Multiple matching
Before listening, read the rubric and quickly try to paraphrase the sentences. This will give you an idea of what to listen for.
c) You are going to hear five students talk about volunteering. Read the sentences (A-F) in Ex. 1d. In pairs, paraphrase each sentence.
e.g. A = had a good time but was ready to leave / had fun but didn’t want to stay longer …etc
d) Now listen and match the speakers (1-5) to the sentences (A-F). There is one extra sentence.
A The speaker enjoyed the experience but didn’t want more.
В The speaker didn’t expect to meet people from all over the world.
C The speaker was surprised they made so many good friends.
D The speaker originally planned to stay for a shorter time.
E The speaker stays in touch with the children.
F The speaker says you experience a country in a different way when you volunteer.

Last year, I volunteered at an orphanage in Kenya. It was the most amazing experience. Volunteering makes you realise how lucky you are and teaches you to be grateful for what you have. The children at the orphanage were really sweet and I grew very close to all of them. When the time came to leave, I was really sad to say goodbye. I still send the kids postcards and letters in the mail. And I write to the other volunteers who were at the orphanage with me.

This summer, I volunteered for two weeks at an orphanage in China. It was one of the best experiences of my life! I took lots of things from home to give to the children as presents - things like board games, toys and paints. It was so much fun watching the kids play with their new toys. Volunteering is very hard work though! I loved the time I spent at the orphanage but two weeks was enough for me. Many of the people I volunteered with stayed for longer than two weeks. But for me, two weeks was just the right amount of time.

Two years ago, I volunteered at a large orphanage in Brazil. I made friends from all over the world and had the chance to work with an amazing group of children. Volunteering is an incredible thing to do because when you volunteer you arentaskt just a tourist - you actually feel like youtaskre living in that country. The local people treat you differently, too. Theytaskre so happy that you have come to help their community that they do everything to make you feel welcome. They treat you like youtaskre a local, not just a tourist.

Last year, I volunteered for a month at an orphanage in Vietnam. I chose a tiny orphanage in a mountain village in Northern Vietnam, so I was really surprised to find lots of other foreign volunteers at the orphanage. There were people from Europe, Australia and even South Africa, which was really great. I loved every minute of my volunteer experience. The children at the orphanage were all really happy and well looked after. Itaskve already written to the manager of the orphanage to say that I want to come back next summer.

Last summer, I volunteered at an orphanage in Thailand. My work at the orphanage was the most difficult thing I have ever done in my life! However, it was also the best experience of my life. I was only meant to spend a month at the orphanage, but when the time came to leave, I didntaskt want to. Thattasks why I stayed for two months instead of one. The children at the orphanage were really happy to have me there, and it felt great to see the smiles on their faces every day. I really recommend volunteering.

Talking about a picture Start by describing the picture as a whole (e.g. where, what), then go into more detail (who, how, what kind, how many, etc). End by speculating about the scene. This will show you can go beyond a simple description.
2 a) Look at the picture and complete the gaps. Listen and check. Find the sentence which speculates on the scene.
The picture shows a group of teenagers on a 1) bus. There are three girls near title front and a boy sitting 2) behind them. Others are sitting at tire back. The girls are wearing brightly 3) coloured clothes and smiling. They and the boy are 4) sending texts or playing games on their mobiles. They all seem to be enjoying themselves so they are probably on a school trip somewhere. I personally find days out lite this a welcome 5) change from the dull routine!
b) In pairs, make your own speculations about the scene.
e.g. Where are they going? What are they thinking? How do they feel?
c) Describe the photo.
Now answer the questions.
1 Do you think the people in the photo are enjoying their travel experience? Why (not)?
2 What was your favourite travel experience? Why?
3 What is your least favourite means of transport? Why?
The Trans-Siberian railway
Last year, Аmа Jones had the travel experience of a lifetime. She took the world’s greatest railway journey -the Trans-Siberian Railway – from Moscow to Vladivostock. Here are her tips for taking this amazing journey.
1 First, consider where you want to end up. There are three different routes. Two end in Beijing and one ends in Vladivostok. Beijing is a wonderful city to visit, but there isn’t a lot to see Vladivostok.
2 Ticket prices for the Trans-Siberian Railway are the same all year. Plane tickets, however, vary greatly in price during winter and summer. Taking the Trans-Siberian Railway in the winter is a good idea because flights to Moscow are cheaper then.
3 The journey from Moscow to Vladivostock takes seven days and can be very tiring. There are lots of interesting places to see in Siberia, so break up the journey by staying a night or two somewhere along the way.
4 The Trans-Siberian Railway is incredibly popular, so tickets sell out very quickly. My advice is to purchase your tickets as soon as you’ve decried to do the trip. I tried to get tickets in November for December, but none wore available until February.
5 I decided to learn some useful Russian phrases before my trip and I’m glad I did. Knowing some Russian -or at least having a phrasebook – is essential because it’s rare to meet anyone on the trains who speaks English.
6 The train makes frequent stops to pick up new passengers. Be very careful when hopping on and off the trail. I’ve heard stories of passengers who got off the train to go sightseeing, missed the train leaving, and had to wait a whole week for another train.
7 At every stop, local women come to sell you food that they have cooked at home. A fellow passenger advised me to avoid the railway shops and to buy my meals from these women. It was good advice because that was some of the tastiest food I’ve ever eaten.
