а) Однажды состарившемуся Юрию Долгорукому захотелось увидеть Владимир: погулять по его улицам, поговорить с сыном, и он отправился в путешествие на Север. Вместе с ним отправилось много людей. Они ехали на своих конях через широкие поля и глубокие леса. Однажды днем, когда они находились посреди темного леса, князь Юрий увидел перед собой большое белое облако. Вдруг оно превратилось в большое животное с тремя головами. Головы его были разных цветов.

b) Князь Юрий Долгорукий был князем русских городов Владимира и Суздаля. Он был сильным и храбрым. Вскоре он стал и киевским князем. Город Владимир находился на севере, а Киев – на юге. Киев был столицей Киевской Руси, ее самым важным городом.

c) Князь не поверил своему старику. Но через несколько часов он со своими людьми пришел на холм, расположенный на берегу Москвы-реки. Место ему понравилось, и он основал здесь новый город. «Я дам ему имя реки. Это будет Москва», – сказал он.

г) Конечно, трудно было управлять двумя городами, которые находились в противоположных частях страны. Юрий Долгорукий послал во Владимир своего любимого сына Андрея.

д) Князь Юрий и его люди не могли понять, в чем дело, но один из его могучих стариков сказал, что знает ответ: «Это чудесное животное показало нам, что недалеко отсюда есть место для великого города. У города будет три стороны, потому что у животного было три головы. Цвета его голов были разными, поэтому в новый город придут жить люди из разных мест».

f) Люди принца не могли ни говорить, ни двигаться. Но один молодой храбрец начал скакать на своем коне к животному. Через минуту животное превратилось в облако и поднялось в небо.

How Moscow Began

a) Once, Yuri Dolgoruki, who was getting old, wanted to see Vladimir: to walk its streets, to speak to his son and he started his trip to the North. A lot of people travelled with him. They travelled on their horses through wide fields and deep forests. One afternoon when they were in the middle of the dark forest Prince Yuri saw a large white cloud in front of him. Suddenly the loud turned into1 a big animal with three heads. Its heads were of many colours.

b) Prince Yuri Dolgoruki was Prince of the Russian cities of Vladimir and Suzdal. He was strong and brave. Soon he became Kiev Prince too. The city of Vladimir was in the North and Kiev was in the South. Kiev was the capital of Kievskaya Russ, its most important city.

c) The Prince didn’t believe his old man. But some hours later he and his men came to the hill situated on the Moskva River. He liked the place and started the new city there. “I’ll give it the name of the river. It will be Moscow,” he said.

d) It was certainly difficult to rule the two cities which were situated in the opposite parts4 of the country. Yuri Dolgoruki sent his favourite son Andrei to Vladimir.

e) Prince Yuri and his men couldn’t understand what it was about but one of his powerful old man said he knew the answer, “This wonderful animal showed us that a place for a great city is not far from here. The city will have three sides because the animal had three heads. The colours of its heads were different, so people from different places will come to live in the new city.”

f) The Prince’s men couldn’t speak or move. But one young brave man began to ride his horse to the animal. A minute later the animal turned into a cloud and went up into the sky.
