Fact file: The yellow-eyed penguins of New Zealand
The yellow-eyed penguin lives in New Zealand. It is one of the most endangered penguin species on the planet. It almost disappeared but now it is being protected by the Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust.
1980s Research showed that the yellow-eyed penguin population was in danger of disappearing.
1987 Conservationists formed the Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust. They wanted to protect these penguins.
1989 The Trust started a plant nursery to grow plants and trees for the penguins’ habitats.
1989-2009 The Trust built fences to protect the penguins’ habitats. They also planted lots of trees and bought land to make more penguin reserves.
Today The penguin population in New Zealand is still declining because of human disturbance, habitat loss and dogs. There are now about 220 pairs of penguins. It’s a very, very dangerous situation for the species. The Trust is working really hard to make sure yellow-eyed penguins have a future.
Discussion
In pairs, talk about why it is important to protect endangered species.
— I think it’s important because if a species dies, other species lose their food.
