В Соединенных Штатах Америки пятьдесят штатов. Население составляет более 200 миллионов человек.

До 1776 года в Америке было много флагов. Род-Айленд, например, имел на своем флаге якорь, Массачусетс – дерево, Нью-Гэмпшир – корабль. В 1776 году после принятия Декларации независимости «Звезды и полосы» впервые стали американским флагом. Тринадцать полос символизируют тринадцать штатов, подписавших Декларацию независимости, а белые звезды – количество штатов во всем союзе. К союзу присоединялись новые штаты, и флаг менялся 26 раз. Два самых новых штата – Аляска и Гавайи.

The national flag of the USA consists of 13 stripes (7 red and 6 white) representing the thirteen states that sighed the Declaration of Independence and white stars (50 since July 4, 1960) on a blue field representing the 50 states of the union.

13 Read the text and answer the question:

What does the national flag of the USA look like?

There are fifty states in the United States of America. The population is over 200 million.

Before 1776 there were many flags in America. Rhode Island, for example, had an anchor on its flag, Massachusetts — a tree, New Hampshire — a ship. In 1776 after the Declaration of Independence the Stars and Stripes first became the American flag. Thirteen stripes represent the thirteen states that signed the Declaration of Independence and the white stars represent the number of states in the whole of the union. New states joined the union and the flag changed 26 times. The two newest states are Alaska and Hawaii.
