Daniel: Hello, I am Daniel from Cardiff, the capital of Wales. I like our national symbol — the daffodil. You can see lots of people with this flower on our national day March 1st. We call it St. David’s Day. The major tourist attractions in the city are Millennium stadium and the Cardiff Castle. If you like music, come to Cardiff for the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition, a world renowned event on the opera calendar which is held every two years.
Sophie: My Names Sophie, I live in Edinburgh, Scotland. I was born on November 30th, which is a national day here, called also St. Andrew’s day. The history of our symbol — thistle — is very interesting. It was chosen not for its beauty, but for its long sharp pricks. When I was small I thought that bagpipes playing in the street, dancing and singing were to say Happy Birthday to me, but actually it’s Happy Birthday to Scotland. One of the landmarks of my city is Edinburgh Castle. It’s built on an extinct volcano. This fortress is a powerful national symbol. Don’t miss the opportunity to see it while you are in Edinburgh!
Patrick: Hi, I am Patrick. I am from Dublin, the capital of Ireland. My country is green and beautiful, our national symbol is the shamrock, a three leaf clover. Do you know that a four leaf clover is a symbol of luck? The 17th of March is my favourite holiday — it’s a national day, called St Patrick’s day. If you come to Ireland, you should visit the Dublin Writers’ Museum, it’s one of the Dublin landmarks. Do you know that some world-famous writers who wrote in English come from Ireland? I mean Jonathan Swift, Bernard Shaw and Oscar Wilde.
Tamsin: Hi, I’m Tamsin, from London, England. My city is not only the capital of England but of all of the UK. There are dozens of places of interest in London — the Tower, Buckingham Palace — to name just a few. We there in London love roses — all colours, but a red and white rose is dear to our hearts — it’s a national symbol. Our history is fascinating. Remember? There were wars of the Red and White roses back in past. The 23rd of April, the day when Shakespeare’s birthday is celebrated is actually our national day, called St George’s day. Amazing facts of history!
