In Europe and North America people usually celebrate Mother's Day in spring. In Russia we celebrate Mother's Day in November.

Easter is celebrated in spring (usually in April or May).

People celebrate St Valentine's Day on the 14th of February.

Most people see New Year in on the 1st of January. People celebrate Christmas on the 25th of December or on the 7th of January.

b) Прочитайте тексты и соотнесите их с поздравительными открытками.

1. День матери обычно отмечается в марте. Люди навещают своих матерей и дарят им цветы и небольшие подарки. Если они не могут приехать к ним в гости, они посылают открытку "с Днем матери". В этот день папы и дети помогают мамам с едой и мытьем посуды.

2. В полночь в Новый год все берутся за руки и поют особую песню. В Шотландии и на севере Англии люди после полуночи отправляются к друзьям. Они стараются первыми пожелать удачи своим друзьям в новом году.

3. На Пасху школы закрываются на две недели. Люди дарят друг другу шоколадные яйца на воскресный праздник. Яйца обычно пустые, но внутри них сладости.

4. День Святого Валентина приходится на 14 февраля. Люди посылают цветы, конфеты и специальные открытки тому, кого они любят. Обычно они не подписываются своим именем. Человек, который получает открытку, должен догадаться.

5. 25 декабря дети просыпаются рано утром. Ведь они хотят посмотреть на носки, полные маленьких подарков на своих кроватях. Другие подарки лежат вокруг рождественской елки. Традиционный рождественский ужин – жареная индейка, жареный картофель и рождественский пудинг.

b) Read the texts and match them with the greeting cards.

1 Happy Mother’s Day is usually in March. People visit their mothers and give them flowers and small gifts. If they cannot visit their mothers, they send a ‘Mother’s Daytask card. On this day, fathers and children help mothers with meals and washing-up.

2 At midnight on Happy New Year, everybody joins hands and sings a special song. In Scotland and the north of England, people go to their friends’ houses after midnight. They try to be the first person to wish good luck to their friends in the new year.

3 At Happy Easters, schools close for two weeks. People give each other chocolate eggs on the Sunday holiday. The eggs are usually hollow1 and have sweets inside.

4 Happy Valentine’s Day is on 14th February. People send flowers, chocolates and special cards to someone they love. Usually they don’t sign their names. The person who gets the card has to guess.

5 On 25th December children get up early in the morning. They want to see stockings full of small gifts on their beds. Other gifts are around the Christmas tree. A traditional Christmas dinner is roast turkey, roast potatoes and Christmas pudding.
