spelling rules for regular verbs in the past simple
most regular verbs: add –ed start - started
regular verbs ending in -e: add – d like - liked
regular verbs ending in consonant + -y: change -y to -/ and add - ed carry - carried
regular verbs ending in consonant + vowel + consonant: double the final consonant

The pronunciation of the past simple of regular verbs changes depending on the spelling of the verb.
