A pour diet
Sometimes people have a deficiency in a nutrient because they do not eat enough of it. These people can get ill.
If you don’t eat enough fibre, you might get constipated.
If you don’t have enough iron, you may get anaemia.
If you don’t have enough iodine, you may get oiter (a swollen neck).
Vitamin deficiency can cause lots of health problems.
Vitamin A deficiency can cause blindness. Vitamin A is found in cheese, fish and eggs.
Vitamin C deficiency can cause a disease called scurvy. Scurvy makes you feel tired and sick, and causes problems with your teeth, skin and hair. Vitamin C is found in fruit and vegetables.
Vitamin D deficiency can cause a disease called rickets. Rickets affects the bones in your body so they become weak and bend. Vitamin D is found in some fish and eggs, but we also get it from sun light.
Other effects of a poor diet.
Food provides us with energy. If you eat a healthy, balanced diet and do regular exercise, your weight should be stable. People who are underweight or overweight usually have a poor diet. The amount of each nutrient we need depends on age, height and lifestyle, but in general if we eat too much, we become fat and if we don’t eat enough, we lose weight.
