Canada
Canada is the second largest country in the world.
The Trans-Canada Highway is the longest highway in the world, at 7821 kilometres long.
The largest city in Canada is Toronto, with over 5 million people, but the capital is Ottawa.
The deepest lake in Canada is the Great Slave Lake, at 614 metres deep.
The traditional lifestyle of the Inuit
The name Inuit means the people. The Inuit arrived in Canada about 1000 years ago, looking for whales to hunt. Their way of life has been influenced by their environment. Nothing grows in the snow so they have traditionally been hunters and fishermen, with their main food coming from caribou (a type of reindeer), whales, polar bears and foxes. Traditionally, they used the skins of these animals to make clothes and boats, the oil for cooking and the bones to make tools. Although their modem lifestyle is now very different, the Inuit are worried by climate change.
Vancouver
Vancouver is a port with snow-covered mountains nearby. It has a very mild climate and it is one of the few cities in the world where you can go skiing and sailing on the same day. People who live in Vancouver enjoy a high quality of life.
Quebec City
Quebec City dates from 1608. Its inhabitants speak French because it was once a French colony. Since 1974, French has been the only official language in the province, but most people also speak English.
The 17th-century walls that surround the city’s Old Town are a UNESCO World Heritage site.
