The Lake District
The Lake District is a beautiful area in the north of England. It is very popular with outdoor sports enthusiasts. It is also popular with tourists just looking for peace and quiet.
As its name suggests, there are lots of lakes in the area. Lake Windermere is the largest lake in England, and it is the centre of the area’s tourist industry.
Cornwall: The Eden Project
Opened in 2001, The Eden Project is a huge ‘green’ theme park. It consists of two huge domes called biomes. The first dome recreates a tropical environment and the second a Mediterranean climate. They are full of plant species from around the world.
The Eden Project site also has exhibition spaces and an educational centre.
Beatrix Potter
Beatrix Potter wrote and illustrated books for children, including The Tale of Peter Rabbit published in the 1890s. With the money from her books, she bought land in the Lake District.
When she died in 1943, she left all her property, including 15 farms, to the National Trust so that future generations could enjoy the Lake District.
William Wordsworth
William Wordsworth was a famous Romantic poet, born in 1770, who lived for most of his life in the Lake District. Nature was very important to Wordsworth, and many of his poems take their inspiration from the beautiful Lake District scenery.
