Apartheid
From 1948 to 1991, South Africa had a policy of racial discrimination called apartheid. The apartheid laws treated the non-white population as second-class citizens. Non-white people were excluded from white residential areas and lived in townships on the edges of the cities. The most famous township was Soweto in Johannesburg and it still exists; its name comes from SOuth WEstern TOwnships. An anti-apartheid movement grew, and a leading figure in this movement was Nelson Mandela. He used the same policy of non-violent protest that Mahatma Gandhi had used in India to campaign for Indian independence.
Nelson Mandela
South Africa held its first democratic elections in 1994. The African National Congress won and Nelson Mandela became president of the country. Mandela was famous for being an anti-apartheid activist, and before the elections he was in prison for 27 years. He was released on 11th February, 1990. Mandela won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993-a joint prize with the vice president F. W. de Klerk - and today he is a symbol of freedom and equality.
The Kruger National Park
The Kruger National Park is the largest area of land in South Africa where wildlife lives in its natural habitat. President Paul Kruger established this protected game reserve to avoid the destruction of wildlife in the area by hunters. There are 147 species of mammals in the park, and among them you can find the Big Five: lions, African elephants, buffalos, rhinoceros and leopards.
