The story behind scrabble
Scrabble is the world’s best-selling word game, with more than a million sets of the game around the world. People play Scrabble in 121 countries and in 29 languages.
Alfred Butts invented the word game Lexico in 1931. He wanted a game that was based on half luck and half skill. Lexico didn’t have a board. Players used cards with letters on to form words.
Butts analysed The New York Times carefully to work out how frequently they used each letter of the alphabet. Then he gave the letters a score and decided how many cards of each letter should go into the pack.
In 1938 crosswords started to become popular and Butts saw how he could combine his card game with a crossword grid. He experimented with different names, boards and letter tiles.
In 1948 Butts met James Brunot, the owner of a company that made games. On 16th December, 1948 Scrabble was born. The Brunot family tried to manufacture the game, but were unsuccessful for a number of years. In 1952, Jack Strauss, the chairman of Macy’s, New York (the biggest department store in the world), played Scrabble with friends while he was on holiday. He enjoyed the game so much that he helped Butts and Brunot sell the game. By 1953 they were producing 6000 games a week.
Demand went up and up and up. The Scrabble craze travelled all around the world and the number of Scrabble players continued to rise. In 1991 the first Scrabble Championship took place in London. Alfred Butts died two years later.
