Почему русского царя Ивана IV называют «Грозным»? Неужели он действительно был таким плохим? Он много сделал для того, чтобы Россия стала великой и могущественной страной, не так ли?

Английское слово «terrible» обычно используется для перевода русского слова «Грозный» в прозвище Ивана. Слово «terrible» означает «плохой» или «злой». Значение слова «Грозный» ближе к первоначальному употреблению слова «terrible» — внушающий страх или ужас, опасный, грозный или угрожающий. Возможно, перевод ближе к предполагаемому смыслу был бы «Ivan the Fearsome», или «Ivan the Formidable».

Why is the Russian czar Ivan IV called “the Terrible”? Was he really so bad? He did much to make Russia a great powerful country, didn’t he?

Answer

The English word terrible is usually used to translate the Russian word “grozny” in Ivan’s nickname. The word “terrible” means “bad” or “evil”. The meaning of “grozny” is closer to the original usage of “terrible” — inspiring fear or terror, dangerous, formidable or threatening. Perhaps a translation closer to the intended sense would be “Ivan the Fearsome”, or “Ivan the Formidable”.
