1 Rachel and Trevor are interviewing Tony Soratt a Bristol resident, on his 100th birthday.
T015 Listen to the interview without looking at the text. Then answer the questions: Was life better when Tony was a young man? Why does he think so?
Robert: Whose photo album is this?
Tony: It’s mine.
Trevor: Can we see it?
Tony: Yes, of course.
Trevor: Whose car is this? Was it yours?
Tony: No, it wasn’t. It was theirs.
Lord and Lady Forrester’s.
Rachel: You used to work for Lord and Lady Forrester?!
Tony: Yes, I used to be their chauffeur.
Trevor: When were you a chauffeur?
Tony: From 1918 to 1950.
Rachel: What differences are there between life then and now?
Tony: Well, people drive faster now. People used to drive more slowly then and more carefully. And life was more interesting in those days.
Rachel: In what ways?
Tony: Well, we didn’t use to watch TV every evening.
Rachel: What did you use to do?
Tony: I used to listen to the radio, go for walks, go cycling. We used to sing songs. Oh, it was lovely … lovely.
Trevor: Did you use to play football?
Tony: Yes, I did. I used to play football for a small club. It was … it was called … er … Compton Road Football Club. Yes … that’s right. It was my brother’s club. I mean, he started it. That’s our team. He used to play football better than me.
Trevor: Whose house is this?
Tony: It’s his. I mean, it’s my brother’s. It was in Compton Road. Now, I’m a bit tired …
Rachel: Yes, of course. Well, thanks very much for the interview, Mr Spratt.
Tony: That’s all right. I like talking about the old times …
