The Canterville Ghost
By Oscar Wilde
Part III
A few days later Virginia Otis saw the Canterville Ghost! He was sitting by the window, watching the leaves fly by. He looked very sad. Virginia felt sorry for the Ghost. “My brothers are leaving tomorrow for school,” she said. “If you behave yourself, no one will bother you.”
The Ghost turned around. “It is my job to misbehave, I must rattle my chains and walk about at night, if that is what you mean. It is my only reason for existing,” he said. He continued to explain why he haunted the old house. He told her that his family starved him to death once.
“Starved you to death? Oh, Mr Ghost, I mean Sir Simon, are you hungry? I have a sandwich in my case. Would you like it?”
“No, thank you, I never eat anything now; but it is very kind of you, all the same, and you are much nicer than the rest of your horrid, rude, vulgar, dishonest family.”
... It turns out that Virginia knew all the time how and why the bloodstain on the carpet reappeared and changed its colour. Hut she never told her family that the Ghost had stolen the paints out of her box ...
“Nonsense!” said Virginia. She turned to leave.
“Please don’t go. Miss Virginia,” cried the Ghost. “I am so lonely, and I don’t know what to do. I want to go to sleep, but I can’t.”
“That’s absurd,” said Virginia.
“I have not slept for three hundred years,” lie said sadly. “And I am so tired. I wish to fall asleep and never wake up,” said the Ghost.
Virginia opened her eyes in wonder and her lips trembled.
“Poor, poor Ghost,” she murmured, “have you no place where you can sleep?”
