2 Did you know …
… why NZ rugby team is called “All Blacks”?
The name “All Blacks” was coined on the New Zealand rugby team tour of the British Isles in the 1905-06 season. There are different theories of the origin of the name. One theory is that the name came from a newspaper misprint. The players were described as “all backs”. Rugby players are divided into two general categories: “forwards” and “backs”. Forwards are generally chosen for their size and strength. They are expected to run with the ball and attack. Backs are usually smaller and faster. Their roles require speed and ball-playing skills, rather than just strength, to take advantage of the field position gained by the forwards. When the journalist said all backs, he probably meant that the forwards passed and kicked the ball with the same skill as the backs, but the paper printed “all blacks” instead. Another theory is that it was simply a reference to the all black colour of their playing strip. Other people believe it was probably a combination of, or a confusion between the two.
You may wonder what the players on the photo are doing — they are not playing rugby. Are they celebrating their victory? Are they expressing their anger at their defeat? No, they are performing haka — a Maori dance.
