2. При переводе прямой речи в косвенную данные глаголы часто заменяют глагол said. Ср.:

James said: "I didn't understand you." (Джеймс сказал: «Я тебя не понял»)

James explained he hadn't understood me. (Джеймс объяснил, что он меня не понял)

Polly said to Tom: "I am going to the buffet." (Полли сказала Тому: «Я собираюсь в буфет»).
