Antony: I know you are a great lover of sport. You always follow Olympics on television and support your favourite football team. But have you ever heard about local Olympic games?
Brenda: Local Olympics? No. Where do they take place?
Antony: I read in a magazine that in Kila Raipur, a small village in Punjab, India, they have Olympics every year. The villagers don’t spend millions of dollars on organizing the games, but at the same time the athletes take their sport very seriously. It looks like the whole event is great fun!
Brenda: How long do the Kila Raipur Olympics last?
Antony: They take three days in mid-February each year. The games started as an event giving the farmers a chance to meet, show off their skills and generally have a good time.
Brenda: Do only farmers participate in the games?
Antony: As I understood, over the years, they have become extremely popular and now include not only the farmers, but also some of India’s finest athletes. The age of the athletes is ranging from 7 to 70 years.
Brenda: What competitions do the Indian Olympics include?
Antony: The Olympics consist of over 50 events, that include modern sports like hockey and athletics, as well as traditional rural sports like tug-of-war and Kabaddi, a team sport that has some characteristics of wrestling and rugby.
Brenda: How unusual! I’d like to know which sports and games the spectators prefer.
Antony: The ones that attract the biggest crowds are the local competitions like the four-lane bullock race, where bulls compete against each other, galloping at high speeds, with their jockeys driving on small carts. Another unusual but equally fun sport is the event that challenges competitors to lift bicycles with their teeth or to pull a car in the same way.
Brenda: Well, it sounds like the Indian Olympics are a kind of festival which local people and visitors can enjoy.
Antony: I think that this event not only tests the strength and endurance of its athletes, but also includes a lot of light-hearted fun. Unlike other sporting events, there is no age barrier to entering any sport. It’s not surprising that the games attract both competitors and spectators from not only India but also other parts of the world.
Brenda: So we can say that the local Indian games are becoming international. It’s a good idea, isn’t it? We can organize our own Olympics in our town and turn them into a new tradition.
