1. Leonardo da Vinci was an Italian scientist, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, painter, sculptor, architect, musician and writer. He was born and raised in Vinci. His mother was a peasant woman, his father was a notary. Leonardo’s parents were never married. His name is famous primarily due to his painted works. Two of his works the “Mona Lisa” and “The Last Supper” are regarded as masterpieces all over the world.
2. Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill was born in 1874 into the family of Lord Randolph Spencer Churchill and an American mother. He was educated in Harrow, one of the most prestigious secondary schools in Britain. He had a very brief career in the army and became a Conservative Member of Parliament in 1900. He held many high positions in Liberal and Conservative governments during the first decades of the previous century.
3. Sherlock Holmes, one of the greatest detectives of all times, as we know came from Britain. His address is also well-known to the admirers of this fiction genre: number 221 B, Baker Street, London. Letters addressed to him continue to arrive at Baker Street. Many people write to this great detective asking him for help. Sometimes they mention that the police cannot do anything or add such words as “please hurry”. As there is no 221 B Baker Street, the postmen bring letters to number 221. They say they get no less than one letter a week.
4. Isaac Ilyich Levitan. This name is known to all lovers of landscape paintings. In 1870 he entered the Moscow school of painting where his elder brother Avel had already studied for two years. Levitan’s instructors were the famous Savrasov, Perov and Polenov. The boy’s success at school was evident. In 1880 his painting “Autumn Day. Sokolniki” was bought by the Russian collector Pavel Tretyakov.
5. Robert Louis Stevenson is a famous British writer and a great traveller too. From his early days he was filled with a desire to travel. He wanted love and adventure, and found them both. Stevenson was born in Edinburgh in 1850. At the age of seventeen he became a student of Edinburgh University. He studied engineering but his heart and thoughts were somewhere else. He wanted to become a writer. In 1883 he published the story of the Treasure Island. The book brought him literary fame and became an adventure classic.
