Текст аудирования:
Interviewer: Mr Smith, you grew up in the ’70s in Philadelphia. What was your neighbourhood like?
Smith: There were people of many religions living together. I went to a Catholic school.
Interviewer:What was your experience growing up black in this neighbourhood?
Smith: My school was 90 percent white, but 90 percent of the kids I played with were black. So I got the best of both worlds. I think that is where my comedy abilities developed. In black neighbourhoods, everybody appreciated comedy about real life. In the white community, fantasy was funnier. I started looking for the jokes that were equally funny for everyone.
Interviewer:Your career is very unusual, isn’t it?
Smith: Many people say that. In fact, I began as a rapper and only later started taking part in television sitcoms.
Interviewer: Were there any musicians or actors in your family?
Smith: No, not any.
Interviewer: Why after leaving school did you choose music but didn’t go to university?
Smith: Well, my first record came out while I was a senior student in high school, I had no wish of going to college or university. Music gave me money and I had some local success.
Interviewer: So you said, “Mom, I’ve got to tell you... ”
Smith: I told my parents I wanted to rap. They said, “Rap?” My mother thought college was the only way. My father was not so sure. We agreed that I would take a year making music, and if it did not work out, I would go to college. That year we won the first Grammy given to a rap artist.
Interviewer: How did your mom react?
Smith: She was not absolutely happy, but at least she began to see my point of view.
Interviewer: Have you ever thought about going back to college?
Smith: The things that have been most valuable to me I did not learn in school.
Interviewer: But there are some basics in education that need to be taught.
Smith: Of course, there are. Reading, writing and arithmetic, because those are the languages of our country.
Interviewer: So, you don’t see any reason to go back to a formal education yourself?
Smith: I know how to learn anything I want to learn. Give me the book, and I do not need somebody to stand up in front of the class.
Interviewer: They put physics in a book, but I know I could never be a physicist.
Smith: The first step is you have to say that you can and in the end you’ll be able to.
