Boris Kustodiev, a famous Russian artist, (1) was also a book illustrator. His life and work are inseparably linked with the Volga and the wide open countryside of the area, where Kustodiev (2) spent his childhood and youth. His deep love for this area never left him all his life.
Boris Kustodiev was born in Astrakhan. His father, a schoolteacher, died young and all financial problems of the family (3) lay on his mother’s shoulders. Despite financial difficulties Boris’ mother sent the capable boy (4) to have lessons with a local artist. A. Vlasov. In 1896 Kustodiev went to St Petersburg and entered the Academy of Arts.
