Astrakhan region is situated in the southwestern Russia. It is situated in the delta of the Volga River, 60 miles from the Caspian Sea. It has an area of 44, 1 square kilometers. The population of the region is about 1 million people. The majority of the population lives in the delta area around the capital. The capital of the region is Astrakhan. It was the capital of a Tatar khanate. But in 1556 this territories became the part of Russia.
