1 Subject box: Give a clear reason for writing.
2 Greeting (formal): If you know the person’s name, write Dear + title (Mr/Mrs/Ms) + name. You don’t need a greeting if you don’t know their name.
3 Tell them why you are writing:
I am writing to ask about. .../I am writing to ask for information about ...
4 Explain your question in more detail. You can use indirect questions to be more polite.
5 Give any extra information.
6 Remind the person politely that you expect an answer.
7 Signature: use a polite phrase, e.g.
Best wishes/Regards and give your full name.
Dear Ms Forester,
I am writing to ask about your advertisement in the International Student Gazette for volunteer workers.
Could you tell me where the work is in Australia and how much flights cost? I am a student, so I have an International Student Card.
