Russian names on world menus: Pavlova
Pavlova is a light meringue cake with whipped cream and fruit on top, usually strawberries and kiwis. It was named after the great Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova. It is believed that the dessert was created in honour of the dancer during or after one of her torus to Australia and New Zealand in the 1920s. The two countries argue as to where the cake originated and claim it as their national dish. But whoever created the wonderful cake, it was inspired by her dancing. The critics wrote about Anna Pavlova, ‘She does not dance; she is flying as though on wings.’
