since

- Используйте since + выражение времени, чтобы показать, когда началось событие:

I’ve been at this school since I was thirteen. (Я учусь в этой школе с тринадцати лет.) = Я начал учиться здесь, когда мне было тринадцать, я здесь и сейчас.

- С since используйте точку или момент времени: 1978, Tuesday (вторник), last winter (прошлой зимой), on my birthday (в мой день рождения), yesterday (вчера) и т. д.

for

- Используйте for, чтобы показать, сколько времени прошло с момента начала события до настоящего момента:

I’ve been at this school for four years. (Я проучился в этой школе четыре года.) = Я начал учиться в этой школе четыре года назад и сейчас нахожусь здесь.

- С for используйте количество или период времени: five minutes (пять минут), two weeks (две недели), most of my life (большая часть моей жизни), a long time (долгое время), ages (века) и т. д.

Осторожно, не запутайтесь!

Мы используем since только с Present Perfect:

He’ worked here since 1998. (Он работает здесь с 1998 года.) НЕ He worked here since 1998.

Мы используем for с Past Simple и Present Perfect:

My teacher has taught in this school for ten years. (Моя учительница преподавала в этой школе десять лет.)

My grandmother taught in a primary school for thirty years. (Моя бабушка преподавала в начальной школе тридцать лет.)

Мы используем ago только с Past Simple:

My dad worked in that factory five years ago. (Мой отец работал на этой фабрике пять лет назад.)

НЕ My dad has worked there five years ago.

With since, use a point or moment in time: 1978, Tuesday, last winter, on my birthday, yesterday, etc.

for

Use for to show the amount of time between when the event started and now:

I’ve been at this school for four years. = I started at this school four years ago and I am here now.

With for, use an amount or period of time: five minutes, two weeks, most of my life, a long time, ages, etc.

Mind the trap!

We use since only with the Present Perfect:

He’s worked here since 1998. not He worked here since 1998.

We use for with the Past Simple and the Present Perfect:

My teacher has taught in this school for ten years. My grandmother taught in a primary school for thirty years.

We use ago only with the Past Simple:

My dad worked in that factory five years ago. not My dad has worked there five years ago.
