The Kyoto Protocol (1997) | This is an international agreement on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere to curb global warming, signed in 1997 in Kyoto (Japan) | Это международное соглашение о сокращении выбросов парниковых газов в атмосферу для сдерживания глобального потепления, подписанное в 1997 г. в Киото(Япония) |
---|---|---|
Renewable energy | To protect the environment, people can use renewable energy sources such as wood, wind, sun, geothermal power, biomass and water stored in dams, lakes and reservoirs | Для защиты окружающей среды люди могут использовать возобновляемые источники энергии, например, использовать древесину, ветер, солнце, геотермальную мощность, биомассу и воду, хранящуюся на плотинах, озерах и водохранилищах |
Biofuels | Biofuels are gasoline or fuels made from processed foods. The use of biofuels will reduce the level of emissions of harmful gases into the atmosphere by 20-60 percent | Биотопливо – это бензин или топливо, произведенное из переработанных пищевых продуктов. Использование биотоплива позволит сократить уровень выбросов вредоносных газов в атмосферу на 20-60 процентов |
Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions | Massively introduce energy-saving technologies in the energy sector, industry and buildings, in transport, and reduce energy losses. Stimulate the production and use of products with a high energy efficiency class. Strengthen the protection of forests from fires and pests | Массово внедрять энергосберегающие технологии в энергетике, промышленности и зданиях, на транспорте, снизить потери энергии. Стимулировать производство и использование продукции с высоким классом энергоэффективности. Усилить охрану лесов от пожаров и вредителей |
Acid rain | To change the situation for the better, comprehensive measures are required, which are possible only with the interaction of several states.

Across the curriculum
The greenhouse effect
1 Match the diagram with the steps below.
1 Radiation from the Sun travels through the atmosphere.
2 The Earth’s surface and the atmosphere reflect some of the solar radiation.
3 The Earth’s surface absorbs most of the solar radiation and temperature rises.
4 The Earth’s surface releases heat in the form of infrared radiation. Some of the infrared radiation travels out of the atmosphere.
5 Some heat is absorbed by the greenhouse gases and is trapped in the atmosphere and the Earth’s temperature rises.
Greenhouse gases
2 Read the text and answer the questions.
The gases in the Earth’s atmosphere protect the Earth from solar radiation and help keep the temperature on Earth at the same level. Without greenhouse gases the Earth would be much colder and would be covered in ice. However, this delicate balance can change if the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere changes.
There are three important greenhouse gases. Firstly, water vapour (H2O) from evaporation of lakes and oceans. Secondly, carbon dioxide (CO2) from many natural processes like animal respiration, volcanic eruptions and decay or burning of organic matter. Thirdly, methane (CH4) from the production of coal, gas or oil and released by some animals like cows as part of digestion.
1 How do the gases in the Earth’s atmosphere protect the Earth?
2 Name three greenhouse gases.
3 Which greenhouse gas comes from oil production?
Global warming
3 Read the text. Why is the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increasing?
In the 20th century, human activity began to have a serious effect on the balance of the greenhouse gases. More and more carbon dioxide went into the atmosphere because of the burning of fossil fueis for energy and because of the destruction of forests. The resuit of this human activity is that there is more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, so more heat is trapped and the result is global warming.
4 What do you know about global warming? Which of the following is not an effect of global warming?
1 Glaciers and polar ice caps are disappearing.
2 There is more travel by aeroplane.
3 There is more flooding.
4 Sea levels are rising.
5 There are droughts and water shortages.
6 There are more destructive storms and hurricanes.
