Cumulative grammar
1 Circle the correct answers.
Chloe: My mum doesn’t like watching the news. She calls it ‘the bad news’ because it (1) is always about horrible things, like war or poverty.
Jake: She’s got a point, but if we (2) didn’t watch the news, we wouldn’t know what was going on in the world. And if we didn’t know, things (3) wouldn’t change.
Chloe: What do you mean?
Jake: Well, if we didn’t know (4) there was a problem with pollution, we wouldn’t be (5) careful about recycling.
Chloe: (6) Maybe you’re right. I don’t know.
Jake: Think about it. If you (7) saw something on the news about famine in Africa, you’d want to do something about it. So next time you saw a charity organization collecting money, you would give them a pound. If you (8) ignored the news, you wouldn’t think about it. You (9) would be totally ignorant.
Chloe: Yes, I think (10) you’re probably right. But the news is depressing.
Jake: Well, not always. Last night they talked about a 100-year-old man. He got a telegram from the Queen!
