Moscow

The flag of Moscow was adopted on February 1, 1995. It is a rectangular dark red banner with the color image of the main element of the emblem of Moscow in the centre. The proportions of the flag are 2:3. It displays Saint George wearing silver armor and an azure cloak. He's holding a golden spear in his right hand and riding a silver horse. It's seen that the horseman is stabbing the Serpent with the spear. Amazingly, the flag came from the legend that originated in Jacobus de Voragine's religious works.

In Moscow the colours of the current flag symbolise:

- red - that all Russian people honor the memory of soldiers left on the battlefield

- black (the colour of dragon) - the forces of evil

- silver and golden ( the colour of George's ammunition and weapons) - success and superiority over the enemy

Флаг Москвы был утвержден 1 февраля 1995 г. Он представляет собой прямоугольное темно-красное знамя с цветным изображением основного элемента герба Москвы в центре. Пропорции флага – 2: 3. Он изображает святого Георгия в серебряных доспехах и лазурной мантии. Он держит золотое копье в правой руке и сидит верхом на серебряном коне. Видно, что всадник пронзает Змия копьем. Удивительно, но флаг пришел из легенды, которая возникла в религиозных произведениях Иакова Ворагинского.

В Москве цвета текущего флага символизируют:

- Красный – то, что весь русский народ чтит память солдат оставшихся на поле боя

- Черный (цвет дракона) - силы зла

- Серебряный и золотой (цвет боеприпасов и оружия Георгия) - успех и превосходство над противником

Example: The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland was often known as BRITAIN. This name is historic, it sends us back to the time of the Roman invasion. The Romans gave the name of Brittania to their southern British province. Now it is used for the larger island of the British isles and even for the whole country because of the political and economic dominance of this part.

The poetic name of the country ALBION is also closely associated with the Romans, it comes from the Latin word "albus", meaninag "white" and reminds us of the white chalk cliffs around Dover on the south coast. The Romans saw the white cliffs when crossing the sea from the continent.
