I would like to present Great Britain to you. Its official name is the United Kingdom. It is situated on the British Isles with the total area of 242,495 sq. km. There are 66,040,229 people who live in UK and the number is still going up. The official language of this country is, without a doubt, the English language. The Major cities of the United Kingdom are London, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Newcastle and Sheffield. The British flag is called 'The Union Jack'. It consists of the English flag, the Scottish flag and the Irish flag. The colors are simple: red, blue and white. This completes my presentation. The official or political name of the country is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The geographical name of the country is the British Isles. The capital of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is London.
The UK occupies the islands which lie off the north-west coast of Europe.
Its area is about 244 thousand sq km. The population of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is 59 million. Its official language is English. The major cities are Birmingham, Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Edinburgh. Sheffield, Belfast, Newcastle and Cardiff.
The flag of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is called the Union Jack. It is because King James I of England in 1603 united England and Scotland. The colours of the flag are: blue, red and white. The Union of Jack is a combination of the crosses of the three patron saints of the country: the red cross of St. George for England on a white background; the white diagonal cross of St. Andrew for Scotland on a blue background; the red diagonal cross of St. Patrick for Ireland on a white background.
The emblem of the UK is the combination of the symbols of the four parts of the country. The State Emblem of Britain shows the union of its four parts: England. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The emblem was introduced after the union with Scotland in 1603. The shield of the emblem is divided into four parts. There are emblems of England (three lions on a red background), emblem of Scotland (a red lion on a yellow background) and the emblem of Northern Ireland (a yellow harp on a blue background).
The emblem of England is the Red Rose. The Scottish emblem is the thistle. The Welsh symbol is a vegetable: a leek (or, in occasion, the flower, the daffodil). The Irish symbol is another wild plant — the shamrock.
