R. L. Stevenson
The name of Robert Lewis Stevenson is familiar to everyone who likes literature. He was a novelist, poet and essayist (1) who became very successful at a certain stage in his career.
Stevenson was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on November, 13, 1850. The son of a well-to-do engineer, Stevenson was expected (2) to follow in his father’s footsteps. Anyhow young Stevenson felt that engineering was not for him. He became a law student in Edinburgh university and soon began writing. In 1875 he qualified (3) as a lawyer. At that time he had already become a popular writer thanks to his essays published in a number of newspapers and magazines. Stevenson had a bad health problem, tuberculosis, which made him spend a lot of time (4) away from home in countries with a more suitable climate. In France he met Fanny Osbourne, who became his wife. Fanny had two children from her first marriage. It was Lloyd, her son, for whom Stevenson made up his stories (5) and then wrote down his famous book “Treasure Island” (6) followed by other children’s stories. Among his grown-up books the horror story, “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” is probably (7) best known.
At the end of his short life the writer and his family moved to one of the islands in the South Pacific where he lived for another six years writing and enjoying the most beautiful and exotic land (8) he had made his home.
