5. A. Listen to the tape, [17], and fill in the information gaps in the text below and complete the text with the figures.
Текст аудирования:
In May (1) 1994 there appeared a land link between Britain and Europe. The Queen of Britain and France’s President Franpois Mitterrand opened the Channel Tunnel with a big formal ceremony. It took (2) 13,000 engineers and (3) 170 million hours to construct the tunnel. It cost about (4) 21 billion dollars to build it. In fact there are (5) three underwater tunnels between England and France: (6) two runner tunnels and (7) one service tunnel. The tunnels are (8) 31 miles or, (9) 50 km long. They are under the sea for (10) 24miles, or (11) 39km.
The history of the Channel Tunnel began in (12) 1802 when Albert Mathieu, a French engineer, suggested a cross channel tunnel to Napoleon. (13) 73 years later the Channel Tunnel Company Limited began digging near Dover in England but in (14) 1882the work was stopped as the British were afraid of a foreign attack through the tunnel. In (15) 1974the French and the British governments started digging again, but the British government stopped the work. In (16) 1986France and the UK agreed to continue the project and in (17) 1994 the tunnel was opened and trains began to use it.
After all these years it is quite clear that the tunnel is a success. It can be regarded as a symbol of a united Europe. Europe is closer than ever to the British Isles. It takes less than (18) 3hours to get from London to Paris. Scientists say that Channel Tunnel could also be part of the solution of the global warming as a high-speed rail journey (19)10 times “greener” than flying.
