2h Curricular: History 1 What do you know about jousting? What would you like to know? Write down three questions in your notebook. Then read the text. Does it answer your questions? Jousting Extreme sports are nothing new. In the Middle Ages, medieval knights 1) risked life and limb in a sport called jousting. Two knights on horseback, each carrying a lance (a longer, heavier version of a spear) would ride towards one another at high speed. 2) To win, a knight had to break his lance on his opponenttasks shield or knock him off his horse. Jousting tournaments 3) held to celebrate important events or national festivals. Jousting was seen as practice for war and 4) (be) extremely violent. Knights were often seriously injured or even killed. To reduce the risk, knights supplemented 5) their chain mail - small linked metal rings - with heavy armour made of metal plates when competing. They only had small slits in their helmets to see out of, which greatly restricted vision, but protected them. Tournaments attracted not only the royalty and nobility, but also commoners, 6) who position right next to the battlefield gave them an exhilarating experience. In glamorous opening ceremonies, knights would hit the shield of another knight they wished to challenge. It was considered dishonorable if a knight 7) (not/accept) a challenge. After the last joust, prizes were awarded to the 8) (success) knights. Feasting and dancing then closed the event. Today, partly thanks to TV shows and movies, jousting is making a comeback. However, conditions are far 9) (save) than they were in the Middle Ages. 2 Read the text again. Use the words in brackets in the correct form so that they fit the text. Complete the gaps with those new words. Every gap corresponds to a different task (1-9). 3 Match the words/phrases in bold with their meanings: becoming popular again, attractive, very exciting, injury or death, limited. 4 Complete with: opponent, competitors, audience, spectators. 1 Competitors from 20 countries took part in the race. 2 There were over 10,000 spectators watching the tournament. 3 Tom knocked his opponent off his horse in the first round of the tournament. 4 The audience clapped and cheered when the actors came out onto the stage. 5 Listen to and read the text again, then describe the picture. Think about: location, what’s happening, clothes, atmosphere. 6 ICT Find out about another extreme or dangerous sport that was popular in the past e.g. Muay Thai (Thai kickboxing), sumo wrestling, the fishermantasks joust (Egypt). Find out: history, rules, equipment/ clothes, the sport today. Report your findings to the class. Check these words medieval knight, on horseback, lance, spear, at high speed, opponent, shield, knock sb off, tournament, chain mail, slit, helmet, royalty, nobility, commoner, battlefield
