2i Writing An opinion essay 1 Decide with statements below are T (true) or F (false) when writing an opinion essay. Correct the false statements. Check in the Writing Bank. 1 Write three paragraphs in the main body. 2 Always give your opinion in the introduction. 3 Use colloquial expressions, short verb forms and chatty language. 4 Present the arguments supporting your opinion in the first main body paragraph. 5 Support every argument with examples. 6 Present the argument opposing your viewpoint in the second main body paragraph. 7 Start each main body paragraph with a topic sentence. 8 Attack the argument opposing your opinion in the third main body paragraph. 9 Use fairly formal language. 10 Restate your opinion in the concluding paragraph. 2 Read the rubric. Do you agree or disagree with the statement? Why? Compare ideas with your partner. Comment on the following statement: Extreme sports are too dangerous and should be banned. What is your opinion? Do you agree with this statement? Write your essay (180-220 words). 3 Read the essay and complete the table. Actor Tom Welling once said, "If I was invincible, maybe I would take up some extreme sports." Although participating in extreme sports can give you a sense of freedom, many feel the dangers far outweigh this. I strongly believe they should be banned. To begin with, they involve high risk. Most extreme sports are very dangerous to attempt and can lead to serious injury or even death. What is more, extreme sports are very expensive. They often involve buying expensive equipment and travelling to special locations with mountains, snow or huge waves, for example. This requires a great deal of money. On the other hand, it can be argued that while there is a certain amount of risk involved, enthusiasts take proper safety precautions. They are well-trained and carry safety equipment which helps to prevent injury. More lives are lost every year through road accidents or natural disasters than through extreme sports. However, these precautions are still not enough, as extreme-sports enthusiasts are killed and injured. Road accidents and so on may be more common, but that is because they are an unavoidable consequence of our daily lives. Their victims do not deliberately put themselves in danger. Meanwhile, media coverage of extreme-sports also encourages young people to try similar taskstuntstask at home. All in all, while extreme sports are exciting and fun to some, I feel that they should be banned as they are extremely dangerous. It seems to me that a ban would save the lives of many people. Paragraph Paragraph 1 Argument Argument 1: very risky Opposing viewpoint: Attack on opposing viewpoint Reasons/examples cause injury/death 4 Use the linking words/phrases to complete the table, then find the linking words/phrases in the essay in Ex. 3 and suggest alternatives. in the first place also for example to sum up secondly moreover firstly to begin with all things considered on the other hand however apart from this alternatively therefore for instance in particular in addition because since in contrast furthermore lastly while such as taking everything into account 5 Suggest two arguments to support each viewpoint. Use them to write main body paragraphs like the first in the model in your notebook. 1 All young people should take part in sport. 2 Governments should spend money on promoting insect-eating. 6 Use expressions from the Useful language box to expand the prompts. Which are: beginnings? endings? Which: addresses the reader directly? asks a rhetorical question? uses direct speech Jo quotation? How does the writer begin/end the essay in Ex. 3? A Is it possible that letting children play the roles of criminals in violent video games can do them harm? Some say this is nonsense, but others think these games encourage children to become violent in real life. В All in all, while many people think that competitive sports encourage aggression, I believe that they encourage people to excel. As John Wooden said, taskIttasks not so important who starts the game but who finishes it.task C Have you ever wanted to turn off the TV after seeing а contestant in a reality show covered in cockroaches? Many people love these shows, but some say they go too far. Your Turn 8 Read the rubric and answer the questions. Comment on the following statement: Violent sports such as boxing should be banned.
