1 What do you know about the Royal Observatory in Greenwich? Think of two questions about it. Read the text. Can you answer your questions?
Where Time Begins: The Royal Observatory
A The Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London, is famous for more than just its research into the stars and planets - this is the place where the history of accurate time calculation begins. Whenever the sun is exactly over a line (called the prime meridian) at the Royal Observatory, It Is precisely midday in the UK. Up until fairly recently, all world time 1) is calculated from this line. Though it is an imaginary line circling the earth, it can be physically seen and even 2) touched on the courtyard floor of the Royal Observatory.
В The Royal Observatory was established in 1675 in order 3) to solve a tricky problem. To be able to navigate 4) their way around the world, sailors needed to know the exact time in order to pinpoint how far they 5) had travelled and where they were. However, three hundred years ago, most clocks 6) not that accurate. So the Royal Observatory gathered together some of the most brilliant scientists in Britain to solve the problem and the answer was the prime meridian -a fixed point from which all time would be measured.
C As the meridian goes all the way round the planet, it 7) divides the globe into two hemispheres. Visitors to the Observatory often have their photograph taken 8) standing over the line with a foot in each hemisphere. But that is not the only attraction at the Royal Observatory. It also houses London’s only planetarium as wen as the 9) largest refracting telescope in the UK, plus lots of other exhibits.

2 Read the text below. Use the words in brackets in the correct form so that they fit the text. Complete the gaps with those new words. Every gap corresponds to a different task (1-9). Listen and check your answer.
3 Match the underlined words to their definitions and then use them to make sentences based on the text: very intelligent, not real, find the exact position of, sail/steer, difficult.
4 Find words in the text which are antonyms to the words below.
Para A: unknown (adj); real (adj)
Para B: easy (adv); spread (v); changeable (adj)
Para C: rarely (adv); tiniest (adj)
5 Tell the class three things you have learnt from the text.
6 ICT Find information about an important observatory/science museum in your country. Write about: what it is and why it is important, its history, what visitors can see and do there. Write a paragraph in your notebook and read it to the rest of the class.
