Opinion essays
An opinion essay presents our personal opinion on a particular topic and can be found in a magazine, newspaper, on a website, etc. The essay must clearly state our opinion, supported by justifications.
An opinion essay should normally contain:
an introduction in which we dearly state the topic and our opinion;
a main body containing three paragraphs. The first should present your viewpoint with reasons/examples and the second should present the opposing viewpoint with reasons/examples. The third should present an attack on the opposing viewpoint with reasons and examples. Each paragraph should begin with a topic sentence summarising what the paragraph is about.
a conclusion stating your opinion using different words.
We normally use present tenses throughout an opinion essay, appropriate linking words e.g. Firstly, Furthermore, Also, In particular, since, therefore etc to link ideas together and phrases to express our opinion such as I believe, In my opinion, I think, It seems to me that, I strongly disagree with/thot... etc.
A formal style (formal expressions, longer sentences, full verb forms, formal linking words) should be used. To make your essay more interesting, you can begin/end with any of the following techniques: addressing the reader directly, asking a rhetorical question, using direct speech, using a quotation.

Your English teacher has asked you to write an essay giving your opinion about the following: i All school and college students should be required to take part in competitive sports. i Write your essay (120-180 words).
1 American president Franklin Roosevelt once said: ‘Competition has been shown to be useful up to a certain point and no further.” Where that certain point is remains debatable, especially with regards to sport in schools and colleges.
2 I believe that taking part in competitive sports can benefit every young person, especially those doing team sports. First of all, it will result in the improved health of individuals. Students keep fit and maintain a healthy weight, as well as working off the daytasks frustrations and annoyances.
3 On the other hand, some people believe that these young people may not develop the ability to share and cooperate, if they consider all of life to be a competition.
4 However, most competitive sports demand a high level of cooperation between the players on the team. Even in an individual sport, there must be cooperation between a coach and the competitor. As a result, college students learn that they cannot win in a competition unless they also cooperate.
5 In conclusion, I think competitive sport is a vital part of the educational experience. As Roosevelt himself went on to add -taskcooperation, which is the thing we must strive for today, begins where competition leaves off.”
