Dialogue A
Woman: Hello! What would you like today?
Man: I think I need some fruit — apples maybe, and some oranges. Yes, green apples and oranges, that will do fine.
Woman: Here you are. Can I get you anything else? We’ve got some nice pears and strawberries. They’re off season, but still.
Man: No, thanks. I don’t like pears or strawberries. I’ll just take these. How much is that?
Woman: That will be 6.75 pounds.
Man: Here you are. Keep the change!
Dialogue B
Man: Good morning! Can I have a look at your ticket, please?
Woman: Here you are.
Man: Would you like a window or an aisle seat? Woman: An aisle seat, please. I’m a bit afraid of flying, so I don’t really like looking out of the window.
Man: Okay. Do you have any baggage?
Woman: Yes, this suitcase and this carry-on bag.
Man: That’s fine. Here’s your boarding pass. Have a nice flight.
Dialogue C
Man: Hmmm, there’s not much on the menu here. The grilled chicken sounds good, though.
Woman: Yes, it does, but I think I’ll just have a sandwich today. Maybe even half of one. I’m not really hungry. Man: OK, and I’ll have the chicken. I think we’re ready to order.
Woman: Yes, we are. I’ll just have a tuna and egg sandwich. Do you want separate bills? We’ll have to tell the waitress.
Man: No, no, this lunch is on me, one bill will be fine. Dialogue D
Woman: Hello, welcome! I’m Nurse Smith, can I help you?
Man: Hello, nice to meet you! You’re so friendly. I’m here for an operation and I need to see my ward and talk to the doctor.
Woman: Certainly. Take a seat, please, and relax. You look a bit nervous. Everything’s going to be fine. Do you have an appointment letter?
Man: Yes, here you are.
Woman: Oh, that’s fine. Please follow me to your ward, it’s number 107. The doctor will come and see you in an hour.

Speaker A
The weather is a subject we can always talk about. It often changes and brings cold and heat, sunshine and rain, frost and snow. One day is often unlike the next. In summer the sun shines, often there is no wind and there are no clouds in the sky, it’s blue and beautiful. The next day may be cloudy and windy, it may start raining. The same happens in winter or in any other season.
Speaker B
When autumn comes, the days become shorter and colder. It gets dark earlier and heavy clouds often
cover the sky, bringing rain with them. Sometimes there’s heavy rain, so an umbrella or a raincoat is necessary if we don’t want to get wet through. You can hear people say ‘What bad weather!’ Many people then catch cold and have to stay in bed.
Speaker C
I enjoy it when the frost and snow finally come. Winter is so charming! Fields, forests and houses are covered with snow, and rivers and lakes with ice. But spring again brings sunshine and warm winds. Sometimes it snows, but the snow doesn’t stay long, it melts in the warm sun. Spring brings bright sunshine, green grass and flowers. Every season has its own beauty.
Speaker D
I think people talk about weather all the time. Sometimes I think it’s our main topic of conversation. We usually say ‘Nice day’, ‘Not a bad day’ or ‘It’s nice weather for the time of the year’ if the weather’s fine. We can say ‘It looks like rain’, ‘It looks like snow’ or ‘It’s bad weather’ when the weather’s bad. Weather seems to be a very safe topic.
Speaker E
Weather is not a topic I like to discuss. Usually I don’t even pay attention to what’s going on outside, I just ask my mom what to put on and totally rely on her opinion. I think people talk too much about weather conditions and how they influence their moods. Actually they’re not as important as you might think they are. Surely you live your life in any weather.

Alice: You know, Ben, a boat trip on the Moskva River is something special. Come on, hurry up. The boat sails in fifteen minutes. Let’s hurry and get good seats. The boat’s filling up very rapidly.
Ben: Yes, Alice, I can see it. There’s no need to panic. These trips seem very popular, right?
Alice: Absolutely. Foreign tourists, Russian people from all over Russia, Muscovites with kids and without ...
I came to Moscow last autumn and it was one of the first things I did here. OK, we’re here.
Ben: It’s my first time on a boat trip and where — in Moscow! You’re an experienced traveller. Could you, please, fill me in?
Alice: I’ll do my best. What would you like to know? Ben: First of all, what’s the seating capacity? There’s about 70 or 80 people on the boat right now.
Alice: I believe it takes 100 passengers.
Ben: Wow! Do you think there’ll be that many people on the boat today?
Alice: I guess so. There are lots of people on a nice day like this.
Ben: It’s turned out beautiful weather. We’re lucky. Where shall we sit?
Alice: I suggest we go on the upper deck. We will have more fun there. If it gets cold, we can go downstairs. Let’s take these seats before someone else does. Ben: No sooner said than done. Here we are seated comfortably. The breeze is wonderful. How long does the trip last?
Alice: The trip takes about two hours, it’s a round trip. We start at Kievskaya metro station and we come back here. We can leave the boat at any stop, go for a walk and then continue the boat trip.
Ben: Can we see Red Square from the boat?
Alice: We’ll see the Kremlin and St Basil’s Cathedral but not much of Red Square. We can land there and spend an hour on Red Square.
Ben: A good idea! Let’s do it. I’d like to see as much as possible today. Tomorrow I’m leaving for St Petersburg.
Alice: We never go to bed before eleven o’clock, there’s plenty of time.
Ben: There goes the whistle. We’re off!
Alice: It’s a lovely trip. You’ll enjoy it. I’m sorry I didn’t plan for it yesterday. I would have made some nice sandwiches to take along.
Ben: It doesn’t matter. There’s a restaurant on the boat. I think they serve something more substantial than just sandwiches. And they certainly have soft drinks.
Alice: If we don’t like the food here, we can always have lunch when we leave the boat.
Ben: Or miss it altogether. OK, let’s enjoy our jour¬ney.
