SPEAKING AND LISTENING
1 Read the newspaper article. Check you understand the underlined words.
2 Listen to two conversations about the Farrah Keating story and match them with photos A and B. Which conversation is more formal?
Guilty!
Celebrity dancer Farrah Keating has been found guilty of drink-driving and of failing to report an accident. The judge has given her a 50,000 pounds fine and an eight-month suspended sentence. She has also been banner! from driving. Last September, the dancer, who recently got divorced from actor Leonardo Boom, knocked down eight-year-old London girl, Maira Abbasi, with her car. She didn’t stop to help the girl, who suffered severe injuries to her back and legs. The victim’s father complained that the punishment was too lenient and would not act as a deterrent to other irresponsible drivers.

Ray: [Southern English accent] OK, let’s turn to the next story ... World famous dancer Farrah Keating knocked down an eight-year-old child while she was driving ... And she got a fine, and a suspended prison sentence — em ... eight months. So, John, is that a fair punishment in your opinion?
John: [Welsh accent] Yes, I think so. It was a very large fine — 50,000 pounds! And she was banned from driving for two years!
Ray: Stella?
Stella: [Newcastle accent] I’m afraid I can’t agree with you. Of course it’s not fair! The woman was driving at 50 miles per hour in a 30 miles per hour zone, she went through a red light, and when she hit the poor child, she didn’t even stop to help her. The child was badly injured. Thankfully she’s gonna be OK, but she could have been killed! A suspended prison sentence isn’t enough. I think she should go to prison.
Ray: Well, yes, I agree with you up to a point, but I’m not sure a prison sentence is the best punishment for a car accident.
John: I couldn’t agree more. Her greatest punishment is the guilt she must be feeling. What good will it do sending her to prison?
Stella: It will act as a deterrent to others, won’t it?

Sabrina: [Southern English accent] Hi, Vicky, what are you doing?
Vicky: [Southern English accent] Hi, Sabrina ... Wayne ... Well, I was trying to listen to the radio. Sabrina: The radio? You don’t usually listen to the radio. What were you listening to?
Vicky: It was a news programme. They were talking about the Farrah Keating case.
Sabrina: Oh yeah. I can’t believe she did that, you know. Knock someone down and then just drive away. That’s terrible, that is.
Wayne: [Southern English accent] Yeah, she should go to prison for that.
Vicky: Well, maybe, but think about it for a second. She was scared and she panicked. It could happen to anyone.
Wayne: She wasn’t scared, she was drunk. Did you know that she had drunk half a bottle of wine! And she didn’t have a driving license! The punishment is way too soft!
Sabrina: You’re dead right! She lied when the police arrested her. She said her younger sister had been driving. And her sister isn’t even 18! She’s only got away with it because she’s rich and she’s got good lawyers. She’s a criminal!
Vicky: Come off it, Sabrina! I don’t believe this! She didn’t kill the girl!
Sabrina: No listen, Vicky. You’re just defending her because you like her. But admit it. The punishment is soft. I think anyone who drives a car when they’re drunk should lose their license for life. It doesn’t matter if you kill someone or not. The point is that you could kill someone, right?
Vicky: You’ve got a point. I hadn’t thought about it that way. But what about if she was driving ...
