In the past decade the word ‘leadership’ has become a buzzword all round the world. What do people understand by ‘leadership’?
Speaker A
Nowadays it’s difficult to say what a real leader should be like. As for me, the person who can be a leader should be a good organizer, should be tolerant and patient, attentive to people and ready to take the responsibility for his own actions. That’s what makes the followers respect the leader. But at the same time, it sounds somewhat boring. Leaders should be motivating, full of good positive ideas and readiness to carry them out. A leader should not despair, I mean, after a possible failure he should be able to rise again, and with his optimism inspire people and make them follow him.
Speaker B
Looking back at my teenage days I’d like to say that my whole concept of leadership has really changed. Teenagers usually picture a leader as a rebel, someone ready to go against the mainstream thinking of the adult world. Now as an adult I realize that it was a great illusion, because even in my early twenties, I understand that leaders should be tolerant. Leaders have strong willpower and determination, yes! But listening to the opinion of opponents is essential. Sometimes I regret I came to understand it only now.
Speaker C
As I see it, leadership is not just about reaching organizational goals, but increasing personal development of the members of an organization. In this sense, the very word ‘leader’ has acquired a new meaning. The old style of leadership, I mean the one based on the leaders taking control and making decisions, is outdated. The new leadership style focuses on the value of people and emphasizes empowering them. Good leaders encourage personal growth and creativity in others. They make their followers believe that leaders are not born, but anyone within an organization who has the necessary knowledge, skills, and tools can become a leader.
Speaker D
I believe that leadership is influence and ability to use your official position in different spheres of life — politics, business, education ... and so on. Any time you try to influence the behavior of another person, you start acting as a leader. At work, being a leader usually involves influencing employees, members, or “followers” of some sort to carry out the goals of the company, organization, or group. Today, as the number of small businesses is growing across the globe, the number of people in charge is growing as well. So, it will be right to say that the issue of ‘leadership’ is becoming more acute.
Speaker E
Have you ever thought that true leaders are not born, but made? Leadership, to a great extent, depends on the individual’s understanding that it is a collective process. For example, bosses can’t manage companies without thinking of the company’s success. And everyone in the company contributes to this success. That’s why I believe leadership means positive cooperation among all members of the organization. One of the major differences between a true leader and a selfish carrier builder is rooted in the understanding of this issue.
5 Listen again and discuss in groups. In the past decade the word ‘leadership’ has become a buzz word all round the world. What do people understand by ‘leadership’? Which of the opinions do you support? Why?
