Jill: [RP accent] And now a question for you. Have you ever taken something home, not known what to do with it, and left it on top of your wardrobe? Well, that’s what the man in our next story did, and he got a nasty surprise. Harry Hume has the report.
Harry: [slight Scottish accent] Leslie Brown used to work on a gas platform in the North Sea, but now he’s unemployed. And all because one day he took something home from work. When he got the thing home, he examined it carefully. He had thought it might be useful, but he couldn’t work out what it was. So he put it on the top of his wardrobe. For a long time, nothing happened, and then, one night, the thing started making noises. But Leslie wasn’t worried because he couldn’t hear it. None of his neighbors heard it either. But high up in the stratosphere, 30,000 kilometers above the Earth, a Russian satellite heard the thing on top of Leslie Brown’s wardrobe. The thing was saying, ‘Mayday! Mayday!’ The International signal for help. An international operation began. The
Russians informed the British authorities. RAF helicopters started looking for the strange object. After a few hours, a helicopter located the thing — it was somewhere in the west of Scotland. Soon they discovered that the signal was coming from Rashieburn, a tiny village near Glasgow. Finally, the police found the strange object on top of the wardrobe in Leslie Brown’s bedroom. Mr. Brown was arrested. It turned out that the thing that he had stolen from the gas platform was an important piece of sophisticated radar equipment. Leslie Brown was the first thief to be caught by a satellite. He also lost his job and had to pay over 2,000 pounds for all the problems he had caused. Jill: Thanks, Harry.
