Presenter: Today on Film File, we are lucky to have with us in the studio Andy Fawkes, one of Hollywood’s best-known directors. Welcome, Andy.
Andy: It’s great to be here.
Presenter: Now, before we talk about your latest film, I’d like to ask you a few questions about how you started in film.
Andy: Well, I was always a film fan. When I was at high school, I loved going to movies, but while my friends just wanted to see the latest blockbusters at the cinema, I was always more interested in old films and films from other countries. Of course, when I was growing up, video was only just starting. My family didn’t have one and there weren’t so many channels on TV, but you could still see a few good films every week.
Presenter: Who were your favourite actors?
Andy: Well, even then I was more interested in the director. It didn’t really matter who the actors were. A good director could make an actor good and a bad director can make even the best actor look bad. So I loved the masters, Hitchcock, John Ford, Billy Wilder of course. And because they often worked with the same actors, I sort of liked them, but then I was often disappointed when I saw them in films by other directors. When I left school, I studied film at college and of course, the first thing I bought was a video player. Suddenly I could watch all those films I’d heard about, but I’d never seen like The Seven Samurai and lots of European films that don’t get shown much in America. At college we had to make a short film as part of our course and mine was a sort of mixture of all the styles I liked. It wasn’t very good — I’ve still got it somewhere, but I haven’t watched it for a long time — but it was a new idea and now I love mixing styles in strange ways. Presenter: So, your new film. What’s that about? Andy: Well, it’s a thriller, the main plot is about terrorists in the USA trying to kill the President, but there are some places where the plot changes and makes you think ‘Woah, what’s going on!?’ Well, I hope that’s what it does.
Presenter: And what styles can we look out for?
Andy: There are a few parts where you can see a western influence, especially the soundtrack, the guitar work is very like a western. Some of the camera work too.
Presenter: Well, we can see a little of the film now ...
