Reported speech
о When we use reported speech, we report what was said from our point of view. The tense changes from the one that the speaker originally used.
о When we use direct speech, we write the exact words the person said and put quotation marks around the words.
‘We met on holiday in Sochihe said.
о When we use reported speech, we do not use quotation marks.
He said that they had met on holiday in Sochi.
о This chart shows how the verb tenses change when changing a sentence from direct speech to reported speech.

о We use the object pronoun with to after say.

о We often put that after say/ tell + object pronoun in reported speech.
Direct speech: ‘ You have to stop seeing your friends.task
Reported speech: He said to me/ told me that I had to stop seeing my friends.
Reported questions with if
o We use if to report Yes/No questions.
о The word order is the same as in affirmative statements.
о We change the tenses in the same way as in reported speech.
о That is never used.
