the BIG DEBATE: Is graffiti street art or vandalism?
Some graffiti is considered to be an art form, but it is sometimes considered to be ugly and offensive. When put on private property without permission, graffiti is a form of vandalism and those responsible can be prosecuted.
I think graffiti is definitely art. Itaskd much rather see a wall covered in graffiti than just a plain, grey and boring wall. Graffiti brightens up the place!
I disagree. You shouldntaskt paint graffiti in public places. If you want to see art you can go to a gallery. Graffiti shouldntaskt be allowed - ittasks a form of vandalism.
Street art - or crime?
Recently a group of artists from South London were sent to prison for two years. Their crime was damaging public property. However, as they began their prison sentences, a New York gallery was displaying their work as ‘art’.
There is some confusion about the definition of graffiti. The Tate Modern, one of the most prestigious art galleries in the world, recently commissioned a group of street artists to cover its walls with graffiti. Lots of artists use public spaces to express themselves. Perhaps the most famous street artist is Banksy. His work appears on walls all over the world, and his book is on sale in the Tate Modern bookshop. A lot of people would agree with American street artist Elura Emerald, who thinks that ‘artists who paint on the street are merely expressing themselves, not hurting anyone’ and should not be punished.
However, other people do not see graffiti as an art form. The judge who sent the London artists to prison described their two years of painting trains and train stations around Britain as a ‘campaign to damage property on an industrial scale’. He admitted that the artists were talented, but he pointed out that their work was ‘sprayed all over other people’s property without their consent’.
Some cities have made a compromise, inviting street artists to paint in certain areas. Other cities have put up boards for artists to use. But, for the jailed London artists, there was no compromise.
