the BIG DEBATE: Should low-cost airlines be discouraged?
Low-cost flights have made air travel accessible to almost everyone. This is good news for the consumer, but not for the environment. The increase In flights has caused an increase in the emissions of C02 - a gas which contributes to global warming.
I think low-cost airlines should be banned because they cause a lot of damage to the environment. The more people fly, the more damage is caused.
I disagree. Everybody has the right to fly. Without low-cost airlines only rich people could visit other countries.
Low-cost air travel – How long will it last?
Before 1993, when the first low-cost airline operator started, travelling by plane was an expensive business. But nowadays it is sometimes cheaper to fly from one city to another than to take the train. By cutting costs - no food, no newspaper, no luggage allowance - low-cost airlines have been able to offer fares that almost everyone can afford.
However, there is a negative side to low-cost air travel. CO2 emissions from aeroplanes have doubled since low-cost flights began, a worrying increase given the world’s environmental problems. If you fly from London to Paris, you produce ten times more CO2 than if you go by train.
The low-cost airline operators point out that they are greener than traditional airline operators because their planes are more modern, and they argue that aviation technology is getting cleaner all the time.
However, the future of low-cost air travel is uncertain. Governments have started to charge more taxes for cheap flights, the price and availability of aviation fuel is unstable, and airline operators will soon have to pay a charge for their C02 emissions. All these costs will be passed on to the consumer. The days of cheap air travel may soon be a thing of the past.
Test your memory!
о When did low-cost air travel begin?
о How much more CO2 is produced by flying from London to Paris instead of going by train?
о Will airline operators be able to keep their prices low in the future?
