What is CowParade?
CowParade is the biggest public art event in the world. It started in Chicago in 1999 and has spread to major cities on every continent. CowParade is an exhibition of fibreglass sculptures of life-size cows, decorated by local artists. The huge sculptures are placed around the city in public places like parks and streets so everybody can see them.
The original idea
The concept started in Zurich in 1998. It was based on a similar project of painted lions from two years before. Swiss sculptor Pascal Knapp was commissioned to design the cows. He made them all the same size but varied their positions. Some were lying down and others were standing up. Chicago businessman Peter Hanig was so impressed with the concept that he decided to organize an event in his home town in 1999. Neither Knapp nor Hanig knew that this was the beginning of an international cow boom!
Raising money for charity
After each event, the cows are sold in auctions. Most of the money is given to charity organizations. In Chicago the first cows were sold for a total of $3 million. The auction was held by Sotheby’s and buyers were able to bid online. One cow was bought for $110,000!
The future of CowParade
CowParade is growing and changing. The sculptures do not change but the artists are inspired by their own cultures and styles. Sometimes there are other animals, such as bears in Berlin.
Look out for a CowParade coming to a city near you!
