‘Who is knocking at the door?’ he asked. ‘It (1) can’t be the postman. It’s too late.’
‘It (2) might be the gardener,’ said Peggy
‘It (3) can’t be the gardener – he went home after lunch,’ Eddie replied.
‘It (4) might be your brother,’ said Peggy.
‘It (5) can’t be my brother - he’s on holiday in Mexico,’ said Eddie.
‘It (6) must be the police! They know you haven’t paid your car insurance!’ said Peggy.
The police (7) can’t know about that. The car is in the garage,’ said Eddie.
Suddenly the knocking stopped and they heard footsteps walking away from the house.
‘They’ve gone,’ said Eddie.
‘Yes,’ said Peggy.
‘I’m scared,’ said Eddie.
‘I’m hungry,’ said Peggy. ‘The pizza boy is late.’
‘Oh no! You (8) can’t be serious! Did you phone Pizza-House?’ Eddie asked.
Suddenly he wasn’t scared any more.
