1 Circle the correct words.
Do you ever wonder why there are so many celebrity couples?
Last night I (1) asked gossip writer Sally Haigh from Fame magazine (2) why so many famous people get married to other famous people these days. She told me that this (3) wasn’t a new trend and that celebrity couples (4) had existed for centuries. But she (5) explained that Brangelina style couples - couples who merge into a single identity - are an invention of the press.
I asked Sally if she (6) thought these couples (7) had more chance of splitting up than other couples. She said she (8) didn’t think that was the case. She told me that when famous couples - like Madonna and Guy Ritchie - (9) split up, we read about it as it is happening. She explained that this makes us believe it’s happening every day. She told me that couples like the actors Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn (10) have been together for more than 30 years. But she explained that readers aren’t interested in happy news.
I asked her (11) what she meant and she told me that her readers (12) have told her they prefer to read about divorces than weddings. I told Sally I (13) thought that was rubbish. What do YOU think?
