UNESCOtasks World Heritage
The Organization
Heritage refers to everything that we have inherited from our ancestors and everything that we will pass on to our descendents. Sometimes heritage is natural, like the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Sometimes it is man-made or cultural, like the Roman aqueduct in Segovia.
World Heritage belongs to everybody and it is our duty to make sure that all cultural and natural heritage is identified, preserved and protected.
In 1972 The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) produced an international treaty called the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage.
The Mission
UNESCOtasks World Heritage has a mission that includes some of these objectives:
To ensure the protection of all natural and cultural heritage.
To encourage countries to nominate sites to be included in the World Heritage List.
To provide emergency aid for World Heritage sites in danger.
To involve the local population in preserving their heritage.
To encourage international cooperation on conservation projects.
UNESCOtasks World Heritage was formed from two separate movements. The first focused on the preservation of cultural sites and the second on the protection of the natural world. Because the organization focuses on both, we are reminded of the ways that people interact with the natural world and how important it is to protect and preserve the balance between them.
The Emblem
The World Heritage emblem was designed by Belgian artist Michel Olyff in 1978. The square in the middle represents human skill and inspiration. The circle represents the gifts of nature. The circle shape of the emblem represents the world.
The List
Today the World Heritage List has 981 items. 759 of them are cultural, 193 are natural and 29 are mixed. If you want to find out which places are on the list, visit the website at http://whc.unesco.org.
