1) Here is Vicky’s letter to a teenage magazine.

What opinion does she have about magazines for teenagers?

Itaskm writing to say that teen magazines have been criticized rightly for giving teenagers the wrong impression on different problems. I bay two girlstask magazines but I might stop soon.

Teen magazines give very strong ideas about whattasks "normal". They are so stereotypical and they don’t let you have an opinion or to he different. Teen magazines make you feel that you should have a certain fashion, a certain figure ... Sometimes it makes you feel had about yourself. Why should every girl have exactly the same taste, he exactly the right appearance and size? Real people know they can he themselves and he happy how they are. Why should we follow the standards teen magazine offer?

They dontaskt know anything about teenagerstask lives and fill their pages with gossip on celebrities that nobody really cares about. There is more to life than make-up and clothes. Most of the things in girlstask magazines are just wrong!!! I’m 15 and I don’t feel comfortable reading them!! They teach us things that wetaskre too young to know about. Sometimes I am absolutely shocked by the content and by the language.

I think that magazines should be written by teenagers not adults because they dontaskt know what our life is like today. Magazines should give more practical advice on things that can really influence us. They also should give a warning of both — had language and the wrong content. I would like to read a magazine that meets all the demands hut I haventaskt found one yet.

I buy Shout, Mizz and Cosmo GIRL! and they’re absolutely good for teens. If you are 15 or 16, you won’t want to read magazines for little kids. Teen magazines tell you about what really goes on in your life. They show that young people are not bad and can do positive things. I think that teen magazines cater for every taste and interest. And they let young people express their views and individuality.

Teen mags help you through life. Reading about celebrities in ridiculous situations can be helpful as you can prepare yourself for what’s going to happen when you get older. Ever since I’ve been reading teen mags, I have learnt things that I would never ask my parents about! They always give you practical and emotional advice, which is good and is usually what young people would follow. I, for example, get a lot of good advice from problem sections.

Teenage magazines are also good for reading for fun. Teen mags are full of music, games and fashion. They include great gossip and you can also get really cool pictures and celebrity posters.

If someone thinks that teen mags are rubbish and doesn’t buy them — that’s their choice. Everyone has a free choice. I suggest it should be used in a good way.
