II READING COMPREHENSION (AB-II)
Read the story of John Carr, who changed his career, and decide in which gap (1 — 10) each phrase (A K) should go. There is one extra phrase that you do not need to use.
In his own way, John Carr, 31, was a protester. Everything about him suggested he would become a teacher, (1) but he turned to law. After two years as a lawyer, he realised he would prefer to be in the classroom. He now works as a trainee teacher (2) at a private secondary school in Guildford, Surrey.
“I used to wake up each morning and think: ‘Oh no; (3) I don’t want to go in today And I just thought, well, maybe that’s what life is like. It is such a relief to find it is not. I left law about 18 months ago. I was with a large firm in Brighton. I felt like I wasn’t doing (4) anything constructive.
I suppose I could have moved to a different firm (5) to see if that made a difference to my job satisfaction
. But, to be honest, I didn’t really want to spend five or six years waiting.
I think I knew what (6) I’d always wanted to do — I just needed to finally go and do it. I Both my parents were teachers, I was drawn to teachers and people said (7) I would be good at the job 1 suppose I went against my parents’ wishes. It didn’t surprise my friends and family when I finally accepted that.
I am really enjoying what I am doing. I am learning on the job, teaching politics economics and geography. Every day is different. There is (8) so much variety, freedom and creativity
I feel I’m doing something that is good for people. But I am here for myself as much as for the students. In the future I d like to work (9) in different types of schools and possibly teach overseas . I feel there is a wide choice.
I don’t have any regrets. Not even giving up (10) the prospect of earning all that money as a lawyer”
