A CHRISTMAS STORY IN IPSWICH
(Mila Selensky lives and works in Ipswich. This is a story that happened to her and her kids one Christmas.)
After a lovely walk in Christchurch Park, we were on our way home when suddenly my boys remembered: "What about going to Santatasks Grotto, Mum?". I hoped they would forget, I was so tired. "But you promised," they insisted I was surprised at their enthusiasm. They seemed quite big boys to me. Nick was eight, Fyodor was seven. As for baby Ivan, his opinion remains unknown, as he is only eleven months old.
A promise is a promise, so I went to the shopping mall. Santatasks Grotto was on the second floor, on the left. A few days earlier, I had asked a sales assistant what was required to get into Santatasks Grotto. It turned out, nothing. We just came and joined the queue. Finally, it was our turn to see Santa. Suddenly I heard Nick reading loudly and distinctly: "Please do not forget to purchase a ticket." What ticket? I couldntaskt believe it. I started panicking. But there was no time, and we just went in. We looked around. In the half light, we saw dwarfs. They were nodding their heads and their reindeer was getting ready for a ride.
All was covered with glittering snow. In the middle of the Grotto I saw Santa who was surrounded by boxes with presents. But, oh no! The tickets! We have none!
Santa talked to a small girl, asking her gently about her interests, and then gave her a present.
It was our turn to talk with Santa. I felt so ashamed, I wanted to disappear. Why I had come here without the tickets? Why I will waste Santatasks time? I whispered to the boys: "You will get your presents on Russian Christmas, on the seventh of January." They looked miserable. Santa was about to start a conversation with them when I whispered into his ear: "I am awfully sorry, but we have no tickets. They will get their presents on Russian Christmas, the seventh of January." Santa was surprised. Were the boys in front of him Russian? Yes, they were. Were all of them mining? Of course, they were mine. He asked them a few simple questions with such genuine interest that they melted and told Santa about everything. Then their eyes sparkled, their cheeks glew in delight. What an amazing person Santa was! Santa asked me about Russian Christmas. I explained that we celebrated by the Julian calendar. Santa nodded understandingly. Then to my astonishment, Santa gave each of the boys a present, wrapped in beautiful colourful paper. The baby grabbed his present quickly and held it tight. I was speechless. I could not say a word. Such kind eyes looked at me through the spectacles, and such a gentle voice said: "After all, ittasks Christmas."
We left the Grotto and blinked in the bright light of outside. Suddenly it occurred to me that I could pay then. The cashier received the payment indifferently, but it didn’t. We saw just Santa and that was all that mattered.
"If anyone ever say that Santa doesn’t exist,...", I said. My boys looked at me so happily that I didn’t) finish the sentence.
